Former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Saanie Daara, has said that players who earn a call-up to the Black Stars should be playing for big clubs.
According to him, due to the huge expectations Ghanaians have for the Black Stars to excel in various competitions, it would be prudent for the players to be in good shape to perform when called upon.
The former GFA spokesperson cited how the likes of Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari, and other legendary players were thriving with the team while playing for top European clubs.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Saanie Daara stated that Ghanaian players should strive to play for the best clubs in the world to warrant a call-up to the Black Stars.
“You cannot play for any team and play for the Black Stars. In the past, we had Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, and Sulley Muntari playing at the top level, so these players must strive to play for the best teams in the world, which will help the Black Stars as well,” he said.
Meanwhile, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has announced his squad to face Niger and Angola in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Jordan Ayew will captain the team for the two games, with Thomas Partey missing from the squad for the second time.
The team is on the verge of not securing qualification for the African Cup of Nations for the first time in 20 years following a terrible performance in the matches played.
After four matches, Ghana are third in Group F with two points. Sudan are in second place with seven points, while Angola lead with twelve points.
Ghana must win against Niger and Angola and hope Sudan lose their remaining matches to secure qualification.
