Ghanaian football fans have sharply criticised Francis Amuzu following his recent comments that he wants to play for the Black Stars to honour his father, former Hearts of Oak and Ghana U20 player Theophilus Amuzu.

The 26-year-old Grêmio winger in a recent interview with Asempa FM, stated that his decision to represent Ghana was not motivated by the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, but by a desire to make his father proud.

However, many Ghanaians on social media are not convinced, insisting the timing of his declaration, coming just days after Ghana’s qualification for the tournament, is far too convenient.

The dominant sentiment among fans is that Amuzu should wait until after the World Cup to earn his place in the national team.

Supporters argue that the players who worked hard to secure Ghana’s qualification deserve the opportunity to represent the country on football’s biggest stage.

Some fans also accused the 26-year-old of showing renewed interest in Ghana only when the national team stands on the world stage, insisting that true commitment would have been demonstrated years earlier when he declined previous invitations.

Others maintained that he can still honour his father by contributing to the Black Stars in future tournaments, such as the 2027 AFCON.
