Media personality and entertainment pundit, Mc Yaa Yeboah, has called out Ghanaian musicians who downplay the relevance of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

According to her, disregarding the relevance of the most prominent music award scheme in the country is a sign of unprofessionalism and a lack of seriousness about one’s craft.

“You are not serious as an artiste if you talk down on the Ghana Music Awards scheme. It’s only in Ghana that we don’t take our award schemes seriously,” she stated in a discussion on United Showbiz.

Yaa Yeboah argued that such attitudes reflect a wider issue of how some Ghanaian creatives often fail to place value on their own platforms that celebrate excellence in arts, but are quick to celebrate nominations from foreign award schemes.

She further pointed out that in more developed entertainment industries, award schemes such as the Grammys or BET Awards are regarded with great importance.

“Elsewhere, being a Grammy-nominated or BET-nominated artiste is a big deal. But here, some of our own musicians are the first to discredit our biggest music awards scheme, and I look at those artistes twice,” she added.
