Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician and choral leader Yaw Sarpong has passed away.

Confirmation of his death was given by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, according to Myjoyonline.com. No official statement has yet been issued on the circumstances surrounding his passing.

The news comes at a painful moment for the Asomafo family and the wider gospel fraternity. Just weeks ago, the group was shaken by the death of Maame Tiwa, a long-standing and influential member whose absence was deeply felt within the ensemble.

In recent years, Yaw Sarpong had largely withdrawn from the public eye as he managed ongoing health challenges. Although he made occasional appearances, much of his time was devoted to treatment and recovery.

Yaw Sarpong’s legacy is firmly etched into the foundations of Ghanaian gospel music. As the founder and leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, he helped define the direction of Akan gospel, blending theological depth with disciplined choral arrangements that set a standard for generations to follow.

Under his leadership, the group earned widespread recognition for music that was both spiritually grounded and musically refined. Their work influenced church choirs across the country and reshaped expectations of gospel performance and composition.

Songs such as Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa became timeless anthems, remaining a constant presence in church services and Christian gatherings nationwide.

In recognition of his decades of impact, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, a moment that celebrated his lasting contribution to the sound, structure, and spiritual depth of Ghanaian gospel music.

His demise comes barely a month after his band partner, Maame Tiwaa, passed on.
