President Mahama and Yaw Dabo met at an event in Paris

The owner of Dabo Soccer Academy, Samuel Yaw Dabo, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to invest heavily in football academies across the country to support their development efforts.

He stated that most football academies in Ghana are grappling with financial constraints, which hinder their ability to groom young talents for the future.

Speaking at an event in Paris, Dabo urged President Mahama to prioritise colts football and academies when it comes to monetary support.

“I am also involved in football and own an academy where I take kids from the streets, villages, and orphanages and camp them for training. I cater for more than 30 children. The support given to the Premier League is what we also need, because those of us running academies are struggling. Recently, we qualified for the World Cup, and we train the kids to reach that level. I would plead with you to look at Dabo Soccer Academy, colts football, and other academies in Ghana,” he said in Twi.

The actor further cited how the government has financially supported the Ghana Premier League, equipping various clubs with substantial funds to strengthen their operations.

He commended President Mahama for his contributions to sports development and encouraged him to replicate the same strategy for football academies in Ghana.

“We thank you for your visit to Paris. I commend you for your efforts in sports, because the state of the Ghana Premier League was once appalling, you could finish the season and receive only two billion cedis as prise money. Since you came, there’s been a new arrangement where clubs receive about 10 billion old cedis before the league starts, and the winner gets about 20 billion. So let’s applaud him,” he added.

The Dabo Soccer Academy has been nurturing football talents and has sent some players abroad for trials with European teams.

In 2022, Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, a product from Dabo Soccer Academy was named in Ghana’s squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
