    WOSPAG rewards top female athletes, urges discipline after violence at Ashanti super zonals

     The Women Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG) Ashanti Regional chapter has celebrated the region’s top female school athletes while condemning violent incidents that disrupted the 2026 Ashanti Regional Super Zonal Schools Athletics Competition. 

    The three-day championship, held at Baba Yara Sports Stadium under the Ghana Education Service (GES), showcased standout performances from St. Louis SHS, T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS, Opoku Ware School, and Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS across sprints, hurdles, and field events. WOSPAG awarded cash and material prizes to the top three girls’ teams and recognized the competition’s most promising young female athlete.

    However, reports of student violence, including incidents involving Obrachire SHS, cast a shadow over the event. WOSPAG President Joyce Mahama, who also serves on the Ghana Olympic Committee Women’s Commission, described the behaviour as “unacceptable and disappointing” and extended a formal apology. She called on young athletes nationwide to uphold discipline and respect the law in sporting events.

    Mahama also announced plans for a national seminar and workshop to keep WOSPAG members updated on developments in sports administration and competition standards. The association continues to champion female participation in sports, coaching, administration, and media across Ghana, reinforcing its mission to nurture future women leaders in sport.
