The government has obtained a World Bank loan of US$200 million, with intentions to increase the amount to US$250 million, to transform selected Category B and C senior high schools into Category A institutions as part of a broader strategy to widen access to high-quality secondary education.

In addition to upgrading lower-tier schools, a portion of the funding will be directed at improving facilities in some existing Category A schools to ease overcrowding and enhance the overall learning environment nationwide.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Friday, January 9, 2026, at the inauguration of the Gloria Boatema Dadey–Nifa Basic School in Adukrom, located in the Okere District of the Eastern Region. The new school facility was funded and built by the KGL Foundation.

Iddrisu revealed that once the programme is fully implemented, roughly 30 Category C senior high schools, together with a number of Category B schools, will be upgraded under the initiative. He emphasized that the project is not limited to building classrooms and dormitories but is designed to strengthen the quality of education delivery as a whole.

“We have secured approximately US$200 million from the World Bank, with indications that the amount could be increased to US$250 million, to elevate several Category C and B schools to Category A status, while also expanding facilities in some top-tier schools,” the minister explained.

He added that the physical upgrades will be supported by complementary measures such as the posting of well-trained teachers, the supply of sufficient instructional materials and the introduction of modern teaching tools.

According to the minister, the programme is part of the government’s wider agenda to narrow the gap between senior high schools across the country and to ensure that students, irrespective of where they live, benefit from improved infrastructure and equal educational opportunities.
