Ofori Amponsah has confirmed that no achievement in his decades-long music journey compares to the period he spent learning from and creating music with the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba.

In an interview with Elsie Lamar on Talkertainment on GhanaWeb TV, the veteran singer traced his formative years in the industry to his close association with the legendary musician, describing that chapter as the most rewarding of his career.

“When I came out with Daddy Lumba, the songs we wrote together were my highest point. Later, I released good songs like ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Otoolege’. They were equally good, but working with Daddy Lumba was my sweetest time,” he said.

Amponsah explained that beyond the music, Daddy Lumba played a defining mentorship role that shaped his confidence and artistic direction, urging him to see greater possibilities for himself within the industry.

“He made me see possibilities. He encouraged me to be the best that I can be, and I will miss him so much. He was a great gift to this nation and to the world,” he said.

Reflecting on his influences, the highlife star named Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi as the two artists who left the deepest impression on him during his upbringing, noting that their work helped mould his songwriting approach.

“I grew up listening to Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi. I especially wrote songs around Kojo Antwi’s songs. They are my icons,” he stated.

Ofori Amponsah also spoke emotionally about the death of Daddy Lumba, admitting that the news initially felt unreal. He described the late musician as a father figure whose absence has created a gap that cannot easily be filled.

“I didn’t believe it at first, but when I later confirmed it, I knew my father was gone. There is no one to fill these shoes.

“He is one of the greatest singers Ghana has ever known, and it will take a long time for someone to fill the void he has left,” he stated.
