Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has set the record straight by dismissing claims that he involved the party’s National Council in his recent engagements with the grassroots.

In a statement issued on Sunday September 28, 2025, Antwi-Boasiako addressed comments made by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, stressing that at no point did he invoke the name of the National Council while speaking to party supporters.

“My attention has been drawn to a statement issued by the General Secretary. As a senior member of the party, I would like to set the record straight before his statement wrongly paints me as an antagonist of our beloved party,” part of the statement said.

According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman, his recent remarks centered on the history of the NPP and the lessons that could guide the party’s bid to reclaim power in 2028 with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate.

He drew parallels with the party’s experiences in the 1990s, noting that former President John Agyekum Kufuor had a second chance after his first bid in 1996, which helped him secure victory in 2000.

Antwi-Boasiako argued that just as Kufuor needed “11% plus one” to cross the line in 2000, Bawumia now requires “only 9%” to secure power for the NPP in 2028.

NPP distances itself from statements by Wontumi, Abronye

“My position as Ashanti Regional Chairman places me closer to the people and they consistently tell me about the direction the party should take in recapturing power. The National Council never featured in any of the statements I made,” he stressed.

Antwi-Boasiako also expressed disappointment with the General Secretary for what he described as a rush to judgment influenced by propaganda.

“In this era, where saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to destroy good people, Kodua Frimpong could have simply reached out to me and gotten a full understanding of my statements before issuing a statement that is far from the truth,” he added.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman called for unity within the party as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
