A woman has died after four vehicles crashed in a Waitrose car park.

The fatal collision happened at a branch of the supermarket chain in the town of Saltash, Cornwall, near Plymouth, on Thursday morning.

Police, road paramedics and air ambulance crews rushed to the upmarket grocery shop at 11.45am after a blue Volvo V4 hatchback hit three other cars.

These vehicles – a Mercedes Sprinter van and two smaller cars, a Suzuki Swift and a Ford Focus – were parked and empty at the time.

Despite the best efforts of ambulance workers, the female driver of the Volvo, 78, from Saltash, was pronounced dead at the scene on Avery Way.

It is understood, according to Plymouth Plus, the woman suffered a medical episode while reversing her car, which began to move unpredictably and hit other vehicles.

No one else is understood to have been injured.

The car park was shut while Devon and Cornwall Police officers investigated.
