A Wizz Air flight returning from the Middle East peace summit has been forced to make an emergency landing following passenger reports of an explosion in the cargo hold.

The Airbus A321neo, travelling from Sharm el-Sheikh to Rome, was carrying several journalists and camera operators who were in Egypt‘s Sinai peninsula for the peace conference following Hamas‘ and Israel’s signing of a peace deal last week.

Flight W46118 dropped from 34,000ft to 13,000ft in just eight minutes, and was forced to land in Naples on October 14.

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that those onboard described an explosion from the cargo hold while others said they saw smoke.

Firefighters were dispatched to the plane upon its arrival at Naples International Airport.

The airline told the Daily Mail: ‘Wizz Air confirms that flight W4 6118, operating on 14th October, was diverted to Naples due to an unexpected technical issue.

‘The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers disembarked without injuries. Contrary to some media reports, there were no signs of smoke or fire on board. However, as the safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority, the airline’s maintenance team is conducting a thorough inspection of the aircraft follow the protocols.

‘Passengers and their baggage were coached to their final destination. The airline would like to thank its pilots and cabin crew for keeping everyone safe during the landing and for making the right decision to divert the aircraft to Naples’.

It comes after a brand new Ryanair Boeing plane that was set to carry 160 people to the UK was evacuated after smoke was reported in the cabin and cockpit.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8-200, which had the registration EI-ILN, was due to fly from Krakow, Poland, to Bristol on October 12.

But as the plane taxied to the runway, crew members said they began to smell smoke.

The captain of the plane abandoned the flight, telling flight attendants to open up the emergency slides.
