    • Her mother Maria McMahon died of ovarian cancer in 2021

Footy WAG Bianca Munster has revealed the death of her mum five years ago is the driving force behind her Mother’s Day mission on May 10.

It also comes after her NRL star husband Cameron Munster lost his dad Steven last July aged just 58.

Maria McMahon died of ovarian cancer in 2021 and ever since, the Munster family has taken part in the annual Mother’s Day Classic in Melbourne.

They remember their beloved ‘Nonna’ by visiting her favourite cafe for coffee and cannoli.

‘Mum was the kindest person in the world. To family, to friends, to strangers. Nothing was ever too hard or too much; she would drop everything and anything for anyone,’ the mother-of-three told News Corp.

‘She would always say, ‘Treat people the way you want to be treated.’

‘This is what I want my kids to carry throughout their lives.’

Munster also revealed she felt closer to her footy star husband following the passing of his father.

The grief was familiar and they leaned on each other, with life ‘a blur’ at times in the months that followed.

She is a passionate ambassador for the Mother’s Day Classic and her message to women is crystal clear: Know your body, trust your intuition and seek multiple medical opinions if something doesn’t feel right.

‘I wish people understood how deadly and aggressive this form of (ovarian) cancer is and that usually, once a woman has been diagnosed, it’s generally already at a later stage,’ she said.

‘The memory of my mum is everything to me. Raising awareness and being involved in events like the Mother’s Day Classic is really, really important, not just for me, but for my family.’

A number of wives, partners, mums and executives from the NRL club will take part in the Mother’s Day Classic.

Appropriately, they are registered under the name ‘Storm Fighters’.

Cameron Munster made his NRL debut in 2014 and has won two premierships with Melbourne, in 2017 and 2020.

He has also played in 21 Origin matches for Queensland and represented Australia in 14 Tests.
