General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev Dr Stephen Y Wengam, has confirmed reports on the reason President John Dramani Mahama did not attend the event at Obuasi at the centre of the helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of 8 people, including 2 cabinet ministers.

Speaking to his congregation on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Rev Wengam confirmed that President Mahama was supposed to attend a programme of the church.

He said that the president initially informed him that he was not going to be able to attend the event because he had other engagements, including a trip to Ivory Coast.

The pastor said that he told the person who informed him of the president’s decision not to attend the event that he “would not accept” his decision and asked his prayer team to pray over the matter.

“I called Rev Bawa, and he said, ‘The President said he is not coming,’ and I said, ‘I don’t accept it. Go and mobilise your prayer team and reverse it. Rev Bawa is my witness. Ask him, I told him I don’t accept it,’” he said.

The General Superintendent further stated that the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, also called him to tell him that the president was going to the Ivory Coast, but he rejected it, saying, “No, we are coming for this programme. We have planned for this programme long ago. No way. It was a battle on the phone. I said, ‘Don’t accept it.’”

He said that President Mahama called him while he was speaking to the First Lady.

Rev Wengam said that Mahama explained the issue to him, and he told him, “Your Excellency, I understand. Your will be done.”

He indicated that later, after his conversation with the president, the First Lady sent him a message which read, “We are coming on Wednesday so that the president can travel on Thursday.”

He added, “So, that was how it was averted. If he had come today, he would have travelled yesterday.”
