Former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, may never return to Ghana if protests calling for his return continue, according to musician Showboy.

In a post shared on his social media page on January 25, 2026, Showboy explained that the ongoing demonstrations by some Ghanaians could put the former minister’s life in danger, potentially prompting him to seek political asylum.

Showboy further argued that Ofori-Atta has competent lawyers who will help him fight his case, allowing him to remain in the United States for several years.

The musician also emphasised that those protesting should remember that Ofori-Atta did not commit any criminal offense in the US, noting that overstaying a visa for valid reasons, such as health issues, is considered under immigration law.

EXPLAINER: How ongoing ‘Bring Back Ken’ protests could help Ofori-Atta remain in the US

“Ken Ofori-Atta will seek and apply for political asylum, and he may never set foot in Ghana again if these protests continue. The more protests there are, the greater the risk to his life, and human rights must protect him. He offended the state (Ghana), not an individual. It is our government’s fault for trusting him; it is our fault, not America’s.

“I stayed in immigration prison for seven months, and the process does not move as fast as people think. He will fight the case, appeal it, and could remain there for more than two years. He can work within the system, he has the best lawyers, the best environment, and he wants to be where he is. Always remember, he didn’t commit any crime in America.

“Immigration is a civil, not a criminal matter. ICE can grant him bond; he is entitled to it by law. Overstaying your visa for a valid reason, such as health, is allowed. Immigration law is separate from criminal law. Human rights are a top priority in America. If the immigration judge feels his life is in danger or he is sick, he will be protected,” Showboy wrote.

Ofori-Atta currently faces multiple criminal charges in Ghana and has been declared wanted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over allegations of corruption and corruption-related offenses, including issues arising from the Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited contract and other procurement matters.

However, the former minister remains in detention in the United States after being arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on January 6, 2026, over his immigration status.

Ken ofori atta will seek and apply for a political asylum and he will never step a foot in Ghana again if yall don’t stop the protest …. The more protest yall do . It means his life is in danger and the human right gotta protect him .. he offended the state(Ghana) not an… pic.twitter.com/gkcLfsgYwT
