The Founder of New Jerusalem Chapel, Bishop JY Adu, has recounted how a woman once cursed veteran gospel singer Yaw Sarpong.
In an interview with Smart Ghana TV on January 26, 2026, Bishop Adu claimed that the woman invoked a curse on the late Yaw Sarpong over an unpaid debt.
He alleged that the late singer, along with his older siblings, had visited her to repay the debt and apologise, but she refused to accept their gesture or reverse the curse.
The preacher explained that a spiritualist eventually reversed the curse after the woman declined to make peace with Yaw Sarpong.
Bishop Adu added that the woman passed away on the same day Yaw Sarpong regained his ability to walk amid his health battle.
Inside the life and legacy of late Ghanaian gospel music icon Yaw Sarpong
“When we realised what had happened, we went to find the lady and offer her money, asking for her forgiveness. She refused to accept it. We were told that if we tried and she didn’t forgive, the curse would bounce back to her. We said everything we could, but since she wouldn’t accept the forgiveness, the curse returned to her, and the day Yaw Sarpong walked was the day she died,” he noted.
The legendary gospel musician and Founder of the Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, passed away on January 20, 2026, in Kumasi at the age of 66.
His death comes barely a month after the passing of Maame Tiwa, a key pillar of Yaw Sarpong’s Asomafo music group; a loss that deeply affected the gospel music fraternity.
Yaw Sarpong had battled ill health for several years, occasionally stepping back from public performances to focus on treatment and recovery.
