The campaign team of Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Ayawaso East Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, has accused Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria and National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary aspirant, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, of deliberately frustrating her during the party’s parliamentary primary vetting process.

According to the team, tensions arose at the vetting venue when Hajia Amina requested to be vetted first due to her observance of Iddah — a mandatory Islamic period of seclusion for widows.

They claim that although all other aspirants reportedly agreed to the request and Hajia Amina arrived early for the exercise, Baba Jamal allegedly objected, causing delays and emotional distress.

Addressing journalists after the incident, the campaign’s spokesperson, Abdul Salam Daaru, criticised the former Deputy Speaker’s conduct, describing it as insensitive to both religious and cultural obligations.

“It is very alarming to see that some Muslim men who are supposed to support women were trying to make the process very difficult for Hajia — specifically Hon. Baba Jamal,” Daaru stated.

He further suggested that Baba Jamal’s actions reflected what he described as a “fear of women,” referencing the aspirant’s previous electoral defeat in Akwatia to former MP Ama Sey.

“I don’t know why Hon. Baba Jamal is scared of women. Maybe it is because in Akwatia, it was a woman who drove him out of Parliament, so he is still scared of women,” he alleged.

Daaru stressed that Hajia Amina’s participation in the political process has been guided throughout by respected Islamic scholars, insisting that her request was both legitimate and religiously justified.

“As far as the religious situation is concerned, Hajia is being guided by religious scholars at every stage of what she does,” he added.

The allegations have sparked discussions within the party about religious sensitivity, gender inclusion, and internal unity ahead of the NDC’s parliamentary primaries.

As of the time of filing this report, Baba Jamal Ahmed had not publicly responded to the accusations.
