It was June 16, 2014, a night of high drama in Natal, Brazil, when the world watched Ghana take on the United States in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup.

But while millions tuned in for football, pop superstar Rihanna was watching with a different kind of excitement.

The Barbadian singer, known for her fiery personality and global influence, couldn’t hide her admiration for Ghana’s Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Moments into the game, she took to social media to gush over the Ghanaian midfielder’s looks, posting a picture of him and even hinting that she might switch allegiance to Ghana for the rest of the tournament.

“Da Bae doe! I might have to be team Ghana on this one idc,” she tweeted.

The post quickly went viral, with Ghanaian fans gleefully welcoming Rihanna into the Black Stars family.

Though Ghana eventually lost 2–1 to the U.S., Rihanna’s public show of affection became one of the tournament’s memorable moments for Ghanaians.
