Tems is a Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer

Nigerian superstar, Tems, has advised aspiring musicians to remain authentic and resist pressure to change their sound or style.

Speaking in a recent BBC interview, the Grammy Award-winning singer, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, revealed that her success came from staying true to herself and being “audacious”.

“How I got here is through authenticity and being audacious, believing in yourself so much. Even when people tell you to change your sound or your style, you can look at them and say no,” Tems said.

The “Me & U” singer admitted that her unwavering stance cost her early opportunities, including record deals, but she had no regrets.

“If it meant not being signed, I was okay with not being signed. I went to a couple of places that didn’t sign me, and I was okay with that, because I love music,” she stated.

With dozens of global hits and multiple awards to her name, including the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, Tems’ rise to international fame has been marked by her distinctive sound, proving that staying authentic can lead to success.
