The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has defended the authority’s decision to build a hospital for staff, amid mixed reactions from the public.

Speaking to the media on January 23, 2026, Kotey said the initiative is in line with similar projects by other government agencies, such as the Volta River Authority (VRA) and COCOBOD, and emphasised that the hospital will also serve the general public.

The facility will focus primarily on providing orthopaedic services.

Kotey also revealed that the DVLA recorded a 39% increase in revenue in 2025, attributing the growth to innovative policies implemented by the authority.

In a separate announcement, the DVLA CEO outlined plans to roll out a demerit points system for reckless drivers.

Under the scheme, drivers will lose points for traffic violations, and those whose points reach zero will have their licenses revoked and be required to return to driving school before regaining road access.

“The only way such people will return to the road is to return to driving school. This move is to ensure safety on Ghana’s roads and reduce the carnage,” Kotey explained.

The initiatives reflect the DVLA’s dual focus on improving staff welfare while enhancing road safety nationwide.
