General Overseer of Potter’s City Church, Prophet Nanasei Opoku-Sarkodie, has added his voice to the ongoing social media debate about young people spending extravagant amounts of money on flashy weddings.

In a video shared on X on January 23, 2026, Prophet Nanasei Opoku-Sarkodie described most flashy weddings organised by the youth as irrelevant and a waste of resources.

According to him, the church should demand bank statements from prospective couples as a way of verifying whether they have enough money to take care of themselves after the wedding.

God will not forgive NDC if they repeat past mistakes – Prophet Nanasei Opoku-Sarkodie

“We should cancel loud weddings with receptions when people are going to get married, and we should ask them to bring their bank statements. How can you go and have a flamboyant wedding when there is just five thousand Ghana cedis in your bank account? And after borrowing money, what happens when you go to take somebody’s daughter?

They have been courting for a long time and committing fornication because they can easily marry, but the kind of wedding they want to do means they are waiting for money. You are wasting your time for nothing. Who do you want to impress?” he said.

He further noted that many young people are ready to settle down, but due to the pressure of organising flashy weddings, they end up procrastinating.

Sharing his personal experience, Prophet Nanasei Opoku-Sarkodie said he did not spend a fortune on his own wedding.

‘Responsibilities can cause a man to be unromantic towards his wife’ – Prophet Opoku-Sarkodie

According to him, despite receiving support from individuals, he chose to save the money in his bank account for the future of his marriage.

“How did you do your wedding? I didn’t pay anything, and I was very wise. I remember three people said they would help with my reception. I collected the money and saved it in my bank account. I have been a very smart guy all this time up to today. God has blessed me, but I’m not a waster,” he added.

A wedding is one day. A marriage is a lifetime.

Don’t live beyond your means and struggle later.

Stay simple. Be disciplined. Work with what you have.
