Former Ghanaian footballer Philip Opoku Sampene has opened up about a life-changing conversation with football legend Abedi Pele, whose tough words still resonate deeply with him.

Sampene was once regarded as a player with immense potential, with the entire country at his feet.

Though he went on to have a storied career, his personal struggles off the field, particularly his inability to keep his family together shattered his world.

Reflecting on his life in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah, Sampene recalled how Ghanaian and African football great Abedi Pele warned him about the consequences of his broken marriage.

According to Sampene, the three-time African Player of the Year told him that his struggles began the moment his marriage fell apart.

“Abedi Pele told me my life was ruined by the instability in my marriage. He said that if I had kept my marriage and brought my children together, I’d still be enjoying life,” he said.

Despite playing for some of Africa’s biggest clubs, including Asante Kotoko, Sampene was unable to fully recover from his personal challenges.

Eventually, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he now works as a security officer at Queens Park Rangers—the very club that nearly gave him his first opportunity to play in Europe.
