What began as a licensing dispute over a viral Cameroonian song turned into one of Wendy Shay’s biggest musical breakthroughs.

During an interview on 3Music TV, the Ghanaian singer opened up about the inspiration behind her hit track “Too Late.” The song, she revealed, was born out of emotional turmoil and legal drama.

The trouble started when Wendy released her version of “Vivian,” a song originally by Cameroonian artist Prince Aimé. She and her team had reached out to Prince for licensing rights and paid him a significant, though undisclosed, sum to secure usage.

But things took a frustrating turn when another individual, Waxy Kay, came forward claiming to be the rightful owner. He demanded an additional payment, which Wendy eventually made. Despite that, he came back once again, threatening to remove the track from streaming platforms due to its growing success.

Wendy Shay said she was emotionally drained by the ongoing demands and pressure, and decided to channel that frustration into something new. The result was “Too Late,” a song that captured her feelings during that turbulent period.

However, the track didn’t immediately connect with listeners the way she had hoped. That changed when Tracy Shay, a young girl, danced to it, sparking widespread attention and propelling the song into the spotlight.

Wendy credited Tracy for reigniting the song’s momentum: “This child came into my life as a blessing and to show gratitude to God, to the universe, whatever connected us, I just need to do something for her in return.”

She also emphasized that her focus now is not on the critics, but on honoring the young girl who played such a pivotal role in the song’s success.
