NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that he would put measures in place to enhance various stadiums in the country to meet international standards.

According to him, one of the major concerns in the sporting fraternity is the poor state of pitches in the country, which he intends to fix if his presidential ambition comes to fruition.

The vice president also disclosed that his government will set up a special funding programme geared towards aiding sports development, relative to the grooming and nurturing of talents as well as improving infrastructure.

Speaking at a meeting with the youth to unveil his policies on November 3, 2024, Dr. Bawumia reiterated that he is committed to improving the fortunes of sports in the country to bring success.

“We will establish a sports development fund and upgrade our pitches to meet international standards,” he said.

The state of various national stadiums has attracted backlash from the public, who blame the sporting authorities as well as the government for improper maintenance of the facilities.

The issue arose after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) banned the Baba Yara Sports Stadium from hosting Black Stars matches.

In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports quickly rehabilitated the Accra Sports Stadium, which hosted the Black Stars match against Sudan.

The Essipong, Tamale, Cape Coast, and other national stadiums have not been in good shape.
