Mynewsgh reports that Dr. Ekua Amoako, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications Team, has voiced her displeasure with the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) ongoing and unjust attacks on Electoral Commissioner Jean Mensa. Dr. Amoako addressed the claims in a statement, criticizing the NDC for claiming repeatedly that the Electoral Commission (EC), led by Mensa, tried to rig the polls. “We worked to make sure the elections were peaceful. However, the NDC charges the EC with rigging on a daily basis, Dr. Amoako said. “They will keep saying this, but where is the rigging when they won by such a large margin?”

She added that she felt sorry for Jean Mensa and that the NDC’s harsh criticism and charges were unjustified. Sometimes I feel sorry for Jean Mensa because of how much attention she receives. What has she done wrong? Being the EC is her sole transgression. She’s only attempting to act morally,” she continued. The controversy surrounding the recollation of results in seven disputed constituencies was also addressed by Dr. Amoako, who maintained that the EC operated within its authority. She claimed that the recollection was required to guarantee equity because there had been allegations of pressure on poll workers to announce results that favored the NDC.

After the recollection process, the NPP was ultimately deemed to have won the seven constituencies: Ahafo Ano North, Techiman South, Ahafo Ano South West, Nsawam Adoagyiri, East, Okaikwei Central, and Tema Central.A High Court verdict affirmed the decision to re-collect the results, thus confirming the legality of the EC’s activities. The NDC, meanwhile, has vehemently disagreed with the result. The NDC rejected the results and denounced the re-collation process as “illegal and manipulated” in a statement issued by the party’s general secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey. Dr. Amoako appealed to the people to back the EC’s initiatives to keep Ghana’s electoral procedures fair and transparent. “We have to have faith in our institutions and let them function on their own. “Our democracy is only undermined by baseless accusations,” she said.
