The former Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah, has cautioned against any attempts by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to halt operations of AngloGold Ashanti mining company.

Speaking on the developments surrounding the Obuasi killings on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on January 22, 2025, Owusu Amankwah warned that any attempts to stop the operations of AngloGold Ashanti would be fiercely resisted by the citizenry.

“The blood that was spilled was that of humans, not animals. It is the blood of some NDC members that has been shed and a big issue that must be addressed. The mining operations in Obuasi dates back to 1897 until 2016 when AngloGold was shut down due to the bad governance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“It took the intervention of the NPP government to restore the operations of AngloGold Obuasi mine. Maybe people don’t know but the role AngloGold plays is pivotal and so anybody that will make an attempt to stop operations of AngloGold will face the wrath of the citizenry, he said.

The New Patriotic Party member further blamed the clash and killings on specific statements made by the party’s leadership, holding them accountable for the outcome of the events.

“The besieging of the mining company’s premises by the deceased individuals, in an attempt to take over the gold, was a result of the poor advice given to them by the party’s leadership,” he continued.

Owusu Amankwah also held the military responsible for their failure to manage the situation effectively, noting that their actions contributed to the escalation of the clash, resulting in the loss of lives and property.

He contended, specifically noting that the special training provided to these military personnel in disarming armed individuals could have been effectively applied in this situation.

“I will fault the military personnel because they are trained on how to disarm individuals. If the culprits were armed, they could have disarmed them using such training and tactics. They did not do well at all by killing the individuals…,” he added.
