Ghana’s former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has casted doubt on the readiness of local-based players to feature prominently for the Black Stars, raising concerns about their overall quality and competitiveness.

The former MP for Odododiodio Constituency specifically pointed to goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, suggesting that despite being one of the best in the domestic league, he still falls short at the highest level.

Vanderpuye referenced Ghana’s recent game against Germany, where he believes the goalkeeper struggled in key moments.

“Even Benjamin Asare is a problem. He may be the best goalkeeper in the country, but he lacks many things. Against Germany, he came out twice, and both situations were disasters,” he said.

He further questioned the growing calls for more inclusion of local players in the national team, insisting that the standard in the domestic league remains below what is required for international competition.

“When I hear calls to include local players, I sometimes laugh. How is it possible? They play like Colts players. Who are these local players? The standard is poor. Name three who are good enough to start,” he added.

His comments come at a time Ghana continues preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 18, before facing England and Croatia in Group L.
