Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has commended his players for their remarkable comeback win against Accra Lions at Sogakope.
Having bounced back from their Super Clash defeat against Asante Kotoko, the Phobians were looking for back-to-back victories heading into the game on Sunday, December 29, 2024.
With three points up for grabs, Ouattara’s men quickly made their presence felt as they controlled the tempo from the start and eventually took the lead in the 37th minute through a Mohammed Hussein strike.
The second half, however, proved to be a tough test for the 2021 champions as Accra Lions turned the game around to lead 2-1 with 17 minutes left on the clock.
Facing the prospect of a loss, youngster Mawuli Wayo, who came on as a substitute, scored a three-minute brace to secure all three points for Hearts of Oak.
Speaking after the game, Ouattara acknowledged his team’s struggles during the match but heaped praise on his substitutes for turning the game around.
“We lost concentration when we came from the dressing room. I don’t know what happened, but the important thing is that we took the three points. We couldn’t make it, and Wayo came, Karikari (Martin), and all these players came to change the game and take the three points; that’s the important thing,” he said.
The victory means Hearts of Oak maintain their sixth position but are now just five points behind league leaders Heart of Lions.
They will start 2025 with a home game against Legon Cities at the University of Ghana Stadium on Friday, January 3, 2025.
