Awal Mohammed, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, has sharply criticised the Ministry of Transport, describing its performance as the worst in decades for failing to reflect falling fuel prices in public transport fares.

Speaking on GHToday with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on Monday, January 26, 2026, Mohammed accused the ministry of neglecting its responsibility to regularly review transport fares, arguing that commuters have been shortchanged despite improvements in fuel price conditions.

“We have the worst transport minister in decades,” he said.

“The only time transport fares were reviewed throughout last year was in May. First quarter, second quarter, third quarter, there was no review.”

According to Mohammed, the lack of consistent fare adjustments has created an unusual situation where transport costs in 2024 remain higher than expected, even as fuel prices have declined.

He cited long-distance travel as a key example, noting that fares between Accra and Tamale have remained unchanged despite reductions in fuel prices.

“When fuel was selling at about GH¢14.99 or GH¢14.70 per litre, travelling from Accra to Tamale cost GH¢300,” he explained.

“Today, the price is still GH¢300 on VIP buses, even though fuel prices have come down. That fare is supposed to reduce.”

Mohammed argued that the ministry’s inaction has placed an unnecessary burden on commuters and undermined the potential benefits of lower fuel costs for ordinary Ghanaians.
