Former GBA Communications Director, Mohammed Amin Lamptey

Former Communications Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Mohammed Amin Lamptey has said that the death of boxer Ernest ‘Bahubali’ Akushey cannot be attributed to boxing.

Ernest Akushey AKA Bahubali passed away on the morning of Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The 32-year-old boxer died barely two weeks after suffering from heavy punches in a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

Reacting to the death of Bahubali, Mohammed Amin Lamptey said the public cannot conclude that boxing caused the boxer’s death because he died 11 days after his fight against Jacob Dickson.

“He lost a fight and was suspended for 28 days so that he can rest and regain his strength. Because the rule says if a boxer loses a bout through TKO, the person should be made to go and rest.”

“Boxing you go, win or lose and there is nothing wrong with that. Bahubali lost his last fight in the 8th round and died after 11 days. So if you want to analyze what happened to him, you cannot just conclude that Bahubali’s death was caused by boxing,” Amin Lamptey said in an interview with Happy FM.

Meanwhile, the National Sports Authority has suspended all boxing activities in Ghana following the death of boxer Ernest ‘Bahubali’ Akushey, in consultation with the Sports Ministry.
