Liverpool fans lined the streets outside Anfield to welcome Andoni Iraola and his squad for his first home match in charge.
It was a sell-out crowd against Monaco, and there was certainly a sense of excitement around the ground for the start of a new era under a new manager.
But for the second match in a row, Iraola’s side threw away a two-goal lead – albeit after he made a string of substitutions – and when it comes to quality squad depth, Liverpool have a problem.
“It was quite similar to the game we played against Leeds,” Iraola told LFC TV after the match.
“We played a good first half, especially a good 30 minutes. Right now we probably don’t have much more, in terms of the levels required to play like this. They deserved to turn the game around.
“We won the first two pre-season games, but in the last two we could not sustain the level we want for all of the game. As soon as we made some changes, players started to get tired, and we could not sustain that level. So, we have work to do.”
Iraola has two pre-season games remaining – a double-header against Como on 16 August – before their Premier League season gets under way.
In two weeks time, when they begin their top-flight campaign at Newcastle, the question remains as to who will partner Virgil van Dijk at centre-back.
Alongside Alisson and Cody Gakpo, Van Dijk made his return against Monaco after an extended post-World Cup break.
Van Dijk started the game with 18-year-old Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who looks like a terrific talent but will have to go on loan this season due to work permit issues. It spoke volumes that Liverpool finished the game with Luke Chambers and Wataru Endo at centre-back.
Ronald Araujo, 27, underwent his medical on Sunday as his season-long loan move from Barcelona – with an option to buy for around £47.2m – nears completion, while Jeremy Jacquet, 21, is yet to be involved in full training since completing his move from Rennes.
Jacquet suffered a shoulder injury in February and has recently struggled with a minor knee problem, but Liverpool are optimistic he could play next weekend against Como.
“Jeremy Jacquet, we were in doubt whether to put him in,” said Iraola. “We decided not to, but he should be fine for the next one. It’s taking a bit more time than we were expecting.”
Wirtz and Isak give glimpse of what’s to come
In his programme notes, Iraola spoke about giving the fans a team that they could really identify themselves with and be proud of. He added that this friendly would be an important step on that journey.
Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak will play an integral part and despite the defeat by Monaco, the performances of the pair who cost a combined fee of £225m last summer will give Iraola and the fans plenty of optimism for the season ahead.
They combined well, with Wirtz operating in behind Isak in the number 10 role and it was Isak who scored the first goal with a lovely right-footed finish.
Wirtz was Liverpool‘s best player on the pitch and, after scoring last weekend against Leeds in Chicago, it looked like he scored the second here – but Isak told reporters post-match he didn’t know which of the pair got the final touch.
“I think we agreed that me and Flo [Florian Wirtz], we both got a touch on the ball, but honestly I don’t know who got the first one or the last one,” Isak told LFC TV.
On how much he’s enjoying working with Iraola, Isak added: “Really good. I feel like the spirit is good in the group and we’re all working hard to make things work. We’re going to make sure that we’re ready for the start.”
