The mother of the late Ruth Nartey, a midwife, is grieving the loss of her daughter following her tragic death after being struck by a speeding vehicle.

Exclusive video footage shows the woman inconsolable and mourning her loss during a meeting with Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong.

According to her, she shared a close bond with her daughter and they were inseparable. She added that they are like siblings.

“Immediately my daughter sees me, she will be smiling saying ‘my sister I’m back’ and I will also respond, ‘my friend, I have missed you,’” she said amid tears.

    Background

The entire staff of the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital at Mampong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region, have taken to the streets in protest following the tragic death of their colleague, midwife Ruth Nartey.

On Wednesday, October 27, 2024, Ruth was knocked down by a speeding vehicle near the hospital premises.

She is said to have been receiving treatment at the Greater Accra Hospital (Ridge Hospital) in Accra, where she had been transferred to, but sadly succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, October 31, 2024.

Dressed in red and carrying placards, the hospital staff expressed their grief and frustration, with inscriptions on placards that read, “How many will you kill?” ‘Ruth Nartey, Rest In Peace,” and “Who will be the next victim on the TQMH stretch?”

An eyewitness, Sampson Ayisi, told GhanaWeb‘s George Ayisi, that the unfortunate incident happened when the midwife was on her way home.

“She came for morning duty but she closed at 2PM and decided to wait for a while. So, when she was going to the house, it was around 3 o’clock PM. So, she got here. What we observed was that the driver was sleeping. He was not having control of the steer. So, the car was just going, the person didn’t know the car was coming to her. Before she realised, the car just ran into her, pushed her and at the same time, came to hit a light pole over here. The light pole then blasted,” he said.

The incident has sparked an outcry from hospital staff, calling attention to the dangers posed by speeding vehicles in the area.

They have stressed the need for urgent measures to improve road safety around the hospital to prevent further tragedies.

Ruth Nartey was 27 years old.
