Tariq Lamptey’s brilliant finish on Monday night earned Brighton a crucial point as their quest for European football continues.
The right-back, who missed the Seagulls’ 0-0 draw against Brentford at the Amex Stadium, was given a rare start by head coach Fabian Hurzeler against an Aston Villa side that had been unbeaten at home in their last five matches.
Brighton got off to a strong start with Simon Adingra’s 12th-minute goal.
However, Aston Villa fought back to take a 2-1 lead and seemed poised to claim all three points.
But Lamptey had other ideas. With just nine minutes left, he unleashed a rocket from inside the box to level the game at 2-2.
The move, initiated by Lamptey, began with Kaoru Mitoma laying the ball off to João Pedro, who quickly found Lamptey in space.
The 24-year-old then rifled a first-time shot into the bottom corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance.
The goal was Lamptey’s second in the Premier League this season and his third across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign.
The versatile defender has also provided two assists in the league.
