Gonzalo Garcia scored Madrid’s first goal during the game

Real Madrid survived a wild finish to edge Borussia Dortmund 3-2 and book their place in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup on Saturday, July 5, 2025.

Goals from Gonzalo Garcia and Fran Garcia had Xabi Alonso’s side cruising with a comfortable 2-0 lead, but the game exploded in added time.

Maximilian Beier pulled one back for Dortmund before substitute Kylian Mbappe restored Madrid’s cushion with a stunning acrobatic volley.

But there was more drama when defender Dean Huijsen was shown a red card for hauling down Serhou Guirassy, who stepped up to convert the penalty and make it 3-2.

The final whistle ended a frantic finale, sealing Madrid’s place in the semi-final with Paris Saint-Germain at MetLife Stadium on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The result also keeps Gonzalo Garcia in the hunt for the tournament’s golden boot, his fourth goal of the competition puts him level with Angel Di Maria and Marcos Leonardo, both of whom are now out of contention.

Dortmund, meanwhile, will turn their attention back to domestic football when they face Essen in mid-August.
