During the AFCON 2025 semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco, an unusual incident occurred involving Super Eagles’ goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

The Nigerian goalkeeper in his attempt to keep his gloves dry, placed a towel beside the pitch during the match like any other goalkeeper.

Eyewitnesses and video clips circulating on social media showed that Moroccan stewards removed the towel from its spot, preventing Nwabali from using it.

Despite retrieving a replacement towel, the same interference occurred again, forcing the goalkeeper to repeatedly find new towels while trying to maintain his focus on the match.

While the incident may appear minor, dry gloves are essential for a goalkeeper’s performance, and repeated disruptions could affect concentration during high-pressure situations like a semi-final.

The act drew criticism online, with many questioning how stadium officials could interfere with equipment belonging to players.

The Nigerian Football Federation has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

Fans and observers are calling for stricter enforcement of regulations to ensure that match officials and stewards do not disrupt players’ routines.
