The Black Queens’ ambition of reaching the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final was halted after a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to host nation Morocco in the semi-final on Monday, July 22, 2024.

The Black Queens, who were aiming for their first WAFCON final appearance since 2006, fell short after Evelyn Badu and Comfort Yeboah missed their spot kicks.

The encounter, played before a fully packed stadium, began with both sides adopting a measured approach, with Ghana creating some decent chances.

Ghana broke the deadlock in the 26th minute through Stella Nyamekye, who reacted swiftly to convert a rebound after Morocco’s goalkeeper, Khadija Er-Rmichi, had parried a header from Josephine Bonsu.

Morocco emerged stronger in the second half, increasing the intensity of their attacks, and their persistence was rewarded in the 55th minute following a defensive blunder.

Sakina Ouzraoui exploited a lapse in Ghana’s defence, beating goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan to restore parity at 1-1 and reignite their spirit.

The Queens kept pushing for the winner but were unsuccessful in their pursuit after extra time.

Ghana’s hope of surviving another penalty debacle was foiled after two missed spot kicks, with goalie Cynthia failing to make a save.

The Black Queens will now face defending champions South Africa in the third-place playoff on July 25, 2024, while Nigeria and Morocco will compete for the title.
