A screenshot shows Gloria Owusu wiping her face whiles speaking with the media

A video capturing Trobu Member of Parliament, Gloria Owusu, and her colleagues crying during a press conference has surfaced online.

The footage shows her visibly worried and in tears, following a heated parliamentary session held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, regarding the death of New Patriotic Party MP, Ernest Kumi.

During the proceedings, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, proposed a by-election in Akwatia to fill the vacant seat, a suggestion that stirred strong reactions within the chamber.

In protest of what they considered early and insensitive timing, members of the Minority staged a walkout from Parliament, expressing solidarity with their late colleague and his grieving family.

It was during this that Gloria Owusu, while addressing the press with her colleagues, was captured crying.

According to her, it was inappropriate for the Majority Leader to push for a by-election before the family had formally notified Parliament of the MP’s death, in line with parliamentary protocols.

“We wish to clarify that it was never our intention to walk out or show any disrespect to the Speaker of Parliament. Our actions stem from deep sadness following the passing of our colleague, Member of Parliament Ernest Kumi.

“It is disheartening that so soon after his demise, the Majority Leader is insisting on a by-election in Akwatia. During that discussion, the Speaker rightfully reminded the House that there are established rules and procedures governing such matters,” the MP said.

She continued; “In accordance with parliamentary tradition, the late MP’s family must first formally notify Parliament of his passing before any steps can be taken.”
