The Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa West, Mr Peter Lanchene Toobu, has donated surgical instruments and hospital consumables to health facilities in the Wa West District to support the delivery of quality healthcare.

The items, sourced with support from friends of the MP in the United States, are expected to enhance the capacity of health facilities in the constituency to provide medical and surgical services to residents.

Mr Toobu, speaking at the presentation ceremony on Tuesday at the Wa West District Hospital at Wechiau, also announced the release of GH¢300,000 to the District Health Directorate, representing his share of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Fund, to support healthcare delivery in the district.

He said the money was intended solely to improve the health and wellbeing of residents and urged the health authorities to ensure that every pesewa was used for its intended purpose.

“I do not want a penny to go anywhere. Every penny in that cheque should go to helping the people live a better life,” he said.

According to the MP, the donation formed part of his commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and services for constituents, irrespective of their social or economic status.

He said the medical items would be useful in various departments, including theatres and outpatient departments, and would help health facilities respond more effectively to the needs of patients.

Mr Toobu expressed appreciation to the medical staff in the district for their dedication, particularly those working in difficult conditions and travelling to remote communities despite poor roads and challenges with transportation.

He commended health workers for continuing to provide services to residents during the rainy season and in communities where access remained difficult.

He said the health of the people was critical to the development of the district, stressing that “a healthy district is a productive district, and a productive district is a developing district.”

Mr Toobu said as the elected representative of the people, he considered his position not merely a political office but a responsibility to facilitate development and improve the living conditions of his constituents.

He assured residents of his continued commitment to supporting initiatives that would bring development to the constituency.

The MP said the latest donation was not the first support he had provided to the health sector and would not be the last, adding that he would continue to mobilise resources to complement government efforts.

He also acknowledged the contribution of his supporters in the United States for providing the surgical instruments, consumables and other medical items for the facilities.
