Within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), tensions are rising as the Volta Caucus of the party opposes former President John Dramani Mahama’s support for Alban Bagbin to remain Speaker of Parliament. The Caucus opposes the concept of two Northerners holding the Speakership and Presidency at the same time, citing concerns about regional leadership balance. As their favored candidate for Speaker, the Volta Caucus has nominated Voltarian Edward Korbly Doe Adjaho. Their demand for fair regional representation at the highest levels of government is reflected in this decision. Caucus members contend that supporting Adjaho would promote unity within the NDC and fulfill the party’s desire for diversity.

Shortly after freshly elected MPs are sworn in, on January 7, a dramatic confrontation in Parliament is scheduled to take place as a result of this internal dispute. The stakes for what is predicted to be a stormy session are set to rise as both parties mobilize their supporters to guarantee their favorite candidate wins the Speakership. This event is being widely watched by political watchers because it may have wider ramifications for the NDC’s unity and capacity to handle legislative procedures. If the matter is not settled peacefully, several observers caution that the party runs the risk of widening regional rifts. Others saw it as a test of Mahama’s capacity to control internal dissension and his leadership within the party.

There is a sense of expectation in Ghana’s political landscape as the clock approaches the pivotal midnight session. It remains to be seen if the NDC can come out of this struggle together or divided, but one thing is for sure: on January 7th, all eyes will be on Parliament.
