Renowned Ghanaian highlife musician Kwaisey Pee has opened up about the painful struggles he endured during his childhood.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM’s Ekwanso Dwoodwoo drive-time show, Kwaisey Pee, known in real life as Akwasi Opoku, revealed that his early life was far from the glamour many see today.

According to him, growing up was extremely tough because his father, Agyaaku of the Yamoah & Sunsum Mystics Band fame, traveled frequently due to his work as a musician.

To make matters worse, his mother reportedly left his father when he was just three months old, leaving him without maternal care.

He disclosed that due to his father’s constant travels, he had to pass through the hands of various guardians. Some of these guardians, he noted, were good and treated him well, but others were extremely harsh and neglectful. Kwaisey Pee painfully recounted how, under some of these guardians, he sometimes had to sleep without food.

He further disclosed that due to the pain of hunger, there was a day he was so hungry that he had to pick up someone’s half-eaten roasted corn that was lying on the floor, with hens feeding on it, just so he could have something in his stomach before he slept.

    Watch the video below:

Despite these early hardships, Kwaisey Pee has risen to become one of Ghana’s most respected highlife musicians.

With a career spanning over two decades, five successful albums, and classic hits like Ankonam Yaa, Me Hia Odo, and Ku Me Preko, he continues to make waves in the music industry.
