Veteran Ghanaian actor and cultural icon William Addo, affectionately known as “Akpatse”, has passed away at the age of 72.

He died peacefully on November 22, 2025, after a prolonged battle with severe health complications.

William Addo was a towering figure in Ghana’s creative arts industry, celebrated for his versatility as an actor, director, lecturer, and cultural advocate.

His memorable performances on GTV’s Thursday Theatre and numerous stage and screen productions earned him national admiration and cemented his place among Ghana’s most respected performers.

A highly trained artist, Addo studied Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Ghana before proceeding to the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a master’s degree in Acting and Directing.

His academic background enriched his work both on stage and in academia.

Over the course of his distinguished career, he served in several leadership roles, including Director of the National Theatre and Director of Programmes at the National Commission on Culture.

He also lectured at the University of Ghana’s Theatre Arts Department, where he mentored many actors, directors, and filmmakers who now occupy prominent positions in Ghana’s film and theatre space.

In his later years, Addo battled significant health challenges, including visual impairment caused by glaucoma and cataracts.

Despite these obstacles, he remained deeply respected for his dedication, resilience, and unmatched contribution to the arts.

William Addo leaves behind an extraordinary legacy—one that has shaped Ghanaian theatre, film, and cultural expression for decades and will continue to inspire generations to come.
