German football veteran Mats Hummels has revealed that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season.

Now playing for AS Roma following his move from the Bundesliga in mid-2024, the 36-year-old defender made the announcement through a heartfelt message on his X account.

Widely regarded as one of Germany’s greatest defenders, Hummels boasts five Bundesliga titles, having earned silverware with both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

He spent a combined 13 years at Borussia Dortmund across two separate spells (2008–2016 and 2019–2024), before departing the club in June 2024 following the expiration of his contract.

His time at Dortmund was marked by significant success, including back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, two German Cup triumphs, and appearances in two UEFA Champions League finals.

The 2014 World Cup winner posted: “I’m struggling with my emotions right now. Now comes the moment that no footballer can avoid. After 18 years and so many things that football has given me, I’m ending my career this summer,” he said in a video on X.

Hummels leaves behind a decorated career that includes a FIFA World Cup title and multiple Bundesliga championships, cementing his legacy as one of Germany’s all-time great defenders.

He also made 508 competitive appearances for Dortmund, 118 for Bayern Munich, and has featured 18 times for Roma so far in the 2024/25 season.
