Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged Ghanaians living abroad to register with Ghanaian diplomatic missions to enable the government to better understand their needs and provide the necessary support.
She said Ghanaians remained an important part of the country, regardless of where they lived.
The Vice President made the call when she engaged members of the Ghanaian community in Rwanda as part of her visit to the country.
The engagement provided an opportunity for her to outline the government’s efforts to improve the lives of Ghanaians and listen to concerns from members of the community.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government’s development agenda was aimed at ensuring that the benefits of national development reached the majority of Ghanaians.
She said the government inherited a difficult economic situation characterised by high inflation, pressure on the cedi and high public debt.
According to her, the government was working to stabilise the economy, reduce the debt burden and free up resources for critical sectors, including roads, healthcare and education.
On healthcare, the Vice President said greater attention needed to be given to preventive care, particularly in tackling chronic diseases.
She also said hospitals needed to be equipped with the appropriate facilities and equipment to improve the quality of healthcare delivery.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government was also addressing challenges in the education sector.
She said efforts were being made to improve infrastructure in basic schools and provide students with science and vocational equipment.
According to her, schools must provide safe and welcoming environments for children to learn, warning that poor infrastructure could discourage children from attending school and affect their progress.
The Vice President also called for greater recognition of technical and vocational education.
She said secondary education should be diversified to enable young people to choose courses and careers that matched their interests and abilities.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the contribution of Ghanaians abroad was important to national development and urged them to continue supporting the country.
Ghana’s High Commissioner to Rwanda, Mr Ernest Yaw Amporful, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad.
He commended the Ghanaian community in Rwanda for maintaining a positive image of Ghana and contributing to Rwanda’s development.
He said Ghanaians in Rwanda were making valuable contributions through their professional work, businesses, entrepreneurship, education and community activities.
Mr Amporful said the mission would continue to provide consular assistance, protect the interests of Ghanaians and strengthen relations between the Ghanaian community and the Rwandan authorities.
The President of the Ghanaian Community in Rwanda, Mr Samuel Abban, thanked the Vice President for meeting the community and listening to their concerns.
He also commended the High Commissioner for his open-door policy and continued support for Ghanaians in Rwanda.
Mr Abban urged members of the community to continue upholding the good name of Ghana and strengthening the friendship between Ghana and Rwanda.
