Undefeated Kyrgyz Nurbek Valiz honov (8-0, 7KOs) successfully grabbed the vacant WBA Asia Cruiserweight title when he edged 2-time WBC world champion Sirimongkhon Iamthuam (102-9, 65KOs) on Saturday, August 1, at the World Siam Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand.
This was the second regional belt of the Kyrgyz fighter who just won the WBC Asian Continental Cruiserweight title on May 2 against the former champion Panya Chomphoophuang.
From round 1 to round 8, Valizhonov mostly went on the offensive, throwing punches to experienced Sirimongkhon who displayed well on his counter-attack tactic. It looked Valizhonov being a little better for his more accurate punches. From rounds 9, Sirimongkhon changed his style to aggressive, trading blows with his opponent, who was 24 years younger, in a thrilling display until the final bell rang. Officials scoring, 2 judges scored 97-93 for Valizhonov while the third judge saw different, 96-94 for Sirimongkhon.
In the other co-main event, Chaiyapong Phongwankittikun (14-1, 13KOs) dropped Ratsaran Treesuwan (6-2) twice before he scored a TKO at 2:53 of round 2. Chaiyapong, a son of former WBA world 130lb title holder Yodsanan Nanthachai, is now the Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) 130lb title holder. He is a rising Thai boxer who is expected to become the next professional boxing world champion for Thailand.
Super Featherweight (4 rounds) Daniel Hartwell (5-0, 5KOs) scored a TKO over Pavaret Koonmee at 2:44 of the third round.
