The UDS team made history by reaching the final of the World University Games

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has extended warm congratulations to the University for Development Studies (UDS) Men’s Football Team following their historic qualification to the finals of the FISU World University Football Tournament in China.

UDS sealed their place in the final after edging Spain’s University of Granada in a dramatic penalty shootout on Friday, September 26, 2025. The tightly contested semi-final ended goalless after 90 minutes, forcing the clash into spot-kicks.

Granada faltered first, missing their opener, but UDS stumbled on their fourth attempt to set up sudden death. With everything on the line, the UDS goalkeeper produced a decisive save to hand the Ghanaian side a 5-4 victory, sparking jubilant celebrations.

In a statement, UTAG’s National Executive Council (NEC) praised the team’s achievement, describing it as a “monumental honour,” not just for UDS and Ghana, but for the entire African continent.

UDS are the sole African representatives in the prestigious global university football competition, making their run to the final a historic milestone.

“Your success reflects the virtues of dedication, discipline, and teamwork, as well as the resilience and spirit of excellence nurtured within Ghana’s public universities,” the statement read. “It further demonstrates the capacity of our student-athletes to excel on the global stage when afforded the opportunity and support,” the statement added.

UTAG also commended the technical team for guiding the players this far and urged the entire nation to rally behind UDS as they prepare for the final showdown.

On behalf of the academic community, UTAG reaffirmed its pride in the team’s inspirational accomplishment, encouraging them to continue flying the flags of Ghana and Africa high in China.
