Conversations around content creators in Africa, particularly in Ghana, have intensified, centering on the need for fair compensation, effective monetization of digital platforms, and strategies to safeguard local intellectual property.

This ensures creators benefit financially from their content rather than relying solely on views.

Actress Juliet Ibrahim has expressed frustration over the situation, accentuating that content creators on the African continent are not receiving proper payment for work shared on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

According to the actress, while creators in the United States are earning huge sums for their content, the story is very different in Ghana, where creators often only boast about viewership without seeing any financial return.

Ghanaian TikTok creators could soon get paid locally as GCB Bank steps in

“We’re not getting paid much from the TikToks that we do, the Instagram we’re using. The people are getting paid in America for using Instagram. I saw a friend on his Instagram page in America who gets paid just for posting his reels. He’s making like $8,000 plus. And it’s real, it’s happening. But here we are getting views, number of views. That’s all we get,” she said during the Africa Prosperity Dialogue held on February 4, 2026.

The actress further questioned whether authorities in Africa are actively advocating for content creators to receive their fair share of compensation.

“So our people, are they fighting for us? If Instagram wants to be here, if Meta wants to be here, are you fighting for us in the back end? ‘Okay, our content creators are going to be on your platform. What are they getting? How do we monetise this for them?’ Because that’s the way forward,” she added.

Recently, the Minister of Communications and Digital Technology, Sam George, confirmed that he had formally called on TikTok to provide fair compensation to Ghanaian content creators.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, 2025, the Minister explained that his recommendation followed a recent engagement with TikTok officials aimed at fostering a safe, thriving, and economically beneficial digital ecosystem in Ghana.

“During the meeting, I urged TikTok to ensure fair compensation to Ghanaian content creators. I also proposed the establishment of a local moderation and content governance team to reflect Ghana’s values, protect our user rights, and support national regulatory expectations,” he announced.
