Two United Nations peacekeepers were killed on Monday during an ambush in South Sudan. The patrol came under attack while travelling to the remote area of Pajut in Jonglei State. Unidentified armed individuals carried out the assault, according to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
Casualties and Emergency Response
Seven other individuals sustained injuries during the violent encounter. The wounded victims included three peacekeepers, two members of the South Sudan National Police Service, and two civilian staff members of the mission. In response to the crisis, UNMISS deployed a Quick Reaction Force to secure the location and bolster emergency medical and operational support.
Condemnations and International Law
The leadership of the United Nations mission strongly condemned the bloodshed. Anita Kiki Gbeho, the head of UNMISS, issued a direct statement regarding the tragedy. “Such deadly violence targeting UNMISS personnel who are serving to support peace in South Sudan is unacceptable,” Gbeho said. The mission emphasised that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law, including international humanitarian law. Gbeho added a direct call to action, stating, “I call on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and prompt investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.” Also, Gbeho noted, “I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the peacekeepers who lost their lives and wish those injured a speedy recovery.”
Broader Conflict and Security Crisis
Violence remains widespread across South Sudan amid an unresolved political and military crisis. Government forces have long clashed with fighters and militias loyal to opposition leader Riek Machar. Machar was suspended from his position as vice president following treason charges and other legal accusations that he maintains are politically motivated. Although a 2018 peace agreement was signed between President Salva Kiir and Machar, that accord has effectively collapsed. The ongoing instability has heightened international concerns over a potential return to full-scale civil war, even as authorities face mounting pressure to stabilise the region.

As regional monitors and international bodies urge immediate restraint, the path toward lasting stability depends heavily on renewed political dialogue, strict adherence to international humanitarian law, and the unconditional protection of humanitarian and peacekeeping personnel working on the ground.
