The Head of Communications at the British High Commission in Ghana, Ryan Wilson, has expressed optimism about the Black Stars’ chances of progressing from their group at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to him, England and Ghana are favourites to qualify from the group, based on their recent performances and the quality of players they possess.

Ghana to face Germany in pre-World Cup friendly

“I genuinely want Ghana and England to progress. I really think Ghana has a chance of doing it because, even though Croatia are ranked higher in the world, I don’t think they are quite the team they once were. They have good individuals, but I don’t think they are as strong,” he told Graphic Sports.

Wilson added that Ghana could secure a decent result against the Three Lions, noting, “Ghana has a strong team. The last time Ghana and England played in 2011, it ended in a draw. I also read a statistic that whenever Ghana play their second group game at the World Cup, they usually win, while England’s form tends to be inconsistent. So I think that game could go either way.”

The Black Stars face a challenging task on their path to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the group-stage draw held on Friday, December 5, 2025.

Ghana has been placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, with all four teams battling for a spot in the knockout phase.

Head coach Otto Addo has said that although England are favourites to top the group, he remains confident the Black Stars will advance to the next stage and avoid a group-stage exit.
