The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has instructed its lawyers to demand a retraction and apology from Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson following his recent criticism of the facility.

UGMC’s Director of Medical Affairs, Dr Baffour Gyan, confirmed the development in an interview reported by MyJoyOnline on Monday, August 10, while strongly rejecting Blackson’s description of the medical centre as the “worst hospital in Ghana.”

According to Dr Gyan, Blackson’s mother was referred to UGMC from another hospital after developing a severe infection. He explained that she subsequently spent eight weeks at the facility, including six weeks receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.

The medical director maintained that the hospital’s medical team followed the appropriate procedures in managing her condition and dismissed allegations that the facility mishandled her treatment.

“For diagnosis and management, 100% we did not do anything wrong,” Dr Gyan was quoted as saying.

Dr Gyan also took issue with Blackson’s broader assessment of UGMC, insisting that the comedian’s description of the facility as the worst hospital in Ghana was unfair.

“To come out and say UGMC is the worst hospital, that one I disagree totally,” he stated.

The dispute follows comments made by Blackson on social media in which he criticised the treatment his mother allegedly received at the medical centre.

The UGMC official said the hospital has now taken steps to address the matter through legal channels, with its lawyers instructed to formally demand that Blackson withdraw his statements and apologise.

“Our lawyers have written to him just for him to retract and apologise for all that he said on social media,” Dr Gyan stated.

The development has sparked discussions online about patient experiences, medical accountability and the need for both healthcare institutions and patients to resolve disputes based on verified facts.
