The University of Cape Coast has made history by graduating 63 inmates at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison through its groundbreaking Prison Education Programme. This initiative, a partnership with the Plan Volta Foundation, provides tertiary education to inmates and has garnered international recognition. Despite initial funding challenges, UCC absorbed the full cost of the programme, providing tutors, learning materials, and academic support.
According to UCC Vice Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, “This Programme stands as a powerful testament to our belief that education is a universal right, capable of transforming lives, restoring hope and rebuilding futures.” He disclosed this achievement at the 57th Congregation, where 63 inmates graduated on March 27, 2025.
Professor Boampong also announced the completion of three major facilities, including the Agona Nyarkrom and Dominase campuses, and full accreditation for its satellite campuses. “Together, we can create a future where quality education is accessible to every Ghanaian,” he emphasized, appealing for support to address infrastructural challenges.
The university has maintained its position as the top-ranked university in Ghana and West Africa, and the highest-ranked institution in the sub-region in terms of research quality.
