A semi-trailer has crashed into a train carrying hundreds of commuters at a level crossing in Brisbane, sparking peak hour chaos.

Emergency services were called to Bonemill Road in Runcorn just before 7am Thursday.

Paramedics treated three patients at the scene, who were all reported to be in a stable condition. There were no reports of any injuries.

Extensive damage was seen on the front of the train.

It’s understood that 300 passengers on the Brisbane-bound express train were stranded on board for at least an hour.

The crash has created major train delays on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines.

Trains have been suspended between Kuraby and Altandi. Replacement buses have been arranged.

Commuters are warned to expect delays of up to an hour.

There are also major traffic delays, with diversions in place.

‘The intersection of Beenleigh Road and Bonemill Road is blocked at the level crossing following a crash,’ a police alert stated.

‘Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to expect delays.’

Local residents said the crash sounded ‘like an explosion’.

The incident has also renewed community calls to shut down the level crossing.

‘These things happen because of the existence of level crossings,’ local resident and Bridges Save Lives action group president Ian Ollson told the Courier Mail.

‘We can’t have a repeat of today’s incident.’
